Why doesn't a BOM's cost match the assembled product's ALC?

The Total Cost displayed in an assembled product's Bill of Materials (BOM) is calculated as the sum total of all the BOM's current component Average Landed Costs (ALC), or Last Cost if a component currently has no Stock on Hand (SOH). If a component in the BOM is a Never Diminishing Product (NDP), it's Unit Cost well be populated from the Cost field of the product.

BOM's are designed to show a sum of each component's current costs, rather than the assembled product's current ALC, in order to provide the most accurate estimation of how much it would cost to assemble additional stock given the current value of your inventory. 

As an assembled product's ALC is re-calculated each time it's receipted, assembled, adjusted or returned, it's current ALC is not always expected to exactly match it's BOM's costs. Similarly, if it's component costs have changed since the products was last assembled, the BOM's cost will provide the latest expected cost, that will subsequently affect the assembled product's ALC when next assembled.
